Oregon Ash
Fraxinus latifolia
The only ash native to the Pacific Northwest, Oregon ash grows in wet valley bottoms too flood-prone for most other trees, its compound leaves and opposite branching setting it apart from every broadleaf tree around it.
Where found
Seasonally flooded bottomlands, streambanks, and wet meadows of western Oregon and Washington valleys.
Fun facts
- The only native ash species west of the Rockies in the Pacific Northwest.
- Leaves are compound with 5–7 leaflets — unusual among the region's broadleaf trees.
- Tolerates seasonal flooding better than almost any other Willamette Valley tree.
